My Fellow Bloggers,
It is Fathers Day Down Under.
I had a fruitful and enjoyable day. Ruth my beloved wife of a Jade Annivesary had gone off to Melbourne. She had to run a meeting for the Commonwealth Department for which she works on Friday, and so decided to stay the weekend with our daughter and partner. They are now officially fianceed, after 7 years, and according to Ruth, are planning an April wedding.
So the day started with walking Ruth’s dogs on a frosty morning then breakfast for us all. I then spent the next 4 hours or so planting a range of ground cover and shrubs of Ruthj’s choice. Which replace our lawn as water restrictions now in place on the ACT really preclude having a lawn.
My afternnon was spent at anther recital, the third of six, of Haydn’s keyboard sonatas played by the incomparable Geoffrey Lancaster. One of my fellow concert attendees was a Penang born Chinese, a botanist who had lived for 8 years in St Louis MO. Her husband being a Kiwi curator of the Art of Oceania She had completed a Masters in Botany on the Phylogeny of Arecaceae, Palms, while working at the St Louis Botanical Gardens and is now working on a PhD in much the same area. She had not attended one of these concerts before and was stunned by the music and the scholarship presented by Professor Lancaster.
This evening, on Ruth’s return from Melbourne, we had our new neigbours over for dinner. They are part of the Gujarati diaspora, the husband raised in Tanzania attended University in the UK, the wife India and then in the UK where she attende University.
As they are fairly strict Hindus I had prepared ratatouille on Saturday evening, served with pasta and salad We had an enjoyable evening with no talk of politics or religion! But much discussion on food. sport and the raising of children, of which they have two.
Good night all.
Hayward,
A belated Happy Father’s day.
Hayward
Sound’s like you had a great day.
hayward
happy fathers day.
Yeah, happy fathers day hayward.
Sounds like a lovely day. Well done.
Its been a chilly overcast day here in Cumbria. I’m hoping for some proof tomorrow that the sun still exists.
Congratulations Hayward.
Morgan, you are wasting your time.
Ronnie..I’m beginning to think you might be correct.
But all was not lost today. I am feeling better…finally..and I’m making my first Beef Pie with a topping of mash!! I’m so pleased..had the right leftovers, veg from the kitchen garden, its turning out great
Israel…on Sept 5th I asked you why you think Beck is a racist…please explain
With acknowledgement to J.L. Finch:
Beck’s website (subscription required) also includes the following “comedy” segments, apparently broadcast on Beck’s nationally syndicated radio program:
A mock radio jingle for the species of grouper formerly known as the “jewfish,” containing the line: “Close your eyes and try to picture a great big friendly jewfish — that is unless you’re Jewish. Oh yeah, and that reminds us: Jewfish get real stinky if you leave them in the car.”
Several short segments listing “rejected NCAA team names,” including: “the Los Angeles Limp-Wrists,” “the New Jersey Jumpin’ Jews,” and “the Atlanta Murdering Rampage of Savage Rapin’ Injuns.”
A satirical song about the reformed “New KKK”: The song details the fictitious organization’s practice of “close-to-painful murdering of the dark people.”
A musical mock-tribute to illegal border crossers: The singer refers to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) as a “wasted” “leprechaun.” An announcer says Mexico’s “main contribution to American society is the deflowering of our teenage daughters on spring break.”
A segment titled “Real Iranian A-holes”: The narrator alleges that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad “had relations with a goat.”
Several segments featuring the misadventures of “Middle Eastern superheroes” named “Kandahar” and “Jalalabad”: The two blow themselves up at the end of many episodes.
A mock preview of High Beams, a “five-minute movie” featuring “still pictures” of Jennifer Aniston’s “jugs.”
A song titled, “I Like Chinese”: The singer brands the Chinese “small” and “cuddly,” stating that “they only come up to your knees” and “they all have names like Wang and Chung and Sun-Ji.”
Well Morgan, I hope you enjoyed that pie. I won’t pretend that I haven’t been thinking about it.
Ronnie:
Glasgow isn’t THAT far away from me. Hop on a train…there’s plenty
Morgan,

http://www.theroot.com/views/obama-racist-look-who-s-talking
Glenn Beck, member of the most conservative christainist church in the US, who denied membership to black people until 1978 and whose leader Boyd K. Packer publicly denounced interracial marriage and whose “religion” claimed that the colour of black people’s skin was “down to the mark of Cain”, whose former leader Bringham Young declared that black people were ” “uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild and seemingly deprived of … intelligence.”, is this what you were looking for?
From the last piece l linked to:
You keep taking umbridge when l use the term racist to describe the actions of a lot of the opponents of President Obama. Like a lot of right wingers you like to quote the oft repeated statement that because some Americans voted for a black president it meant the end of racism in America, a thoroughly stupid statement bordering on the naivety you smugly declare others who don’t share your views to have.
Glenn Beck is a racist bigot and a liar, as has been shown by the likes of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who have again and again called him out for his hypocrisy and double standards, something the so called “liberal media” have failed to do properly bar Olbermann, Maddow and Ed Shultz with the one time inclusion of Howard Kurtz.
Who is doing the moderating and why is it taking all this time to check what i’m linking to?
Ronnie
You said:
I took your remarks seriously and looked back to my contributions to this blog to see why you might have said it. since joining this blog I have contributed six articles covering almost all of the hot topics these days including health, energy, free speech, the deficit and so on. For the life of me I cannot figure out why you take my views as opposition only. I have clearly stated my policy preferences on all these issues.

I have attacked some of the proposals because they are currently the ones being considered.
At least I take positions. That is better than sitting on the fence like some kind of academic.

this is precisely the point we have been trying to make on this blog for months. keynesian economics does not work.
I’d still like to know, shockwaver, how you see market economics working when there is no market?
Israel
I am doing the moderating, and it is taking a long time because I was very busy yesterday. Sorry about that but it can’t be helped.
Israel, Israel, Israel….I asked you why BECK is a racist and you give me 3 links to look at.
Link A) is Beck talking about Obama being light skinned and that you can only call him African American to remain politically correct. How does that make Beck a racist?
Link B)This is Beck accusing the President of being racist. Why does that make Beck a racist?
Link C) relates to Beck’s religious background and the people he associated with. Well, blow me down…..if you are a black panther member are you automatically a black racist? Obama and van Jones mixed it up with some terrible racists but are they racist themselves?
Why is Beck racist?
Israel…YOU HAVE NOT ANSWERED MY QUESTION. And as I said two days ago, I would judge your character based on your answers…well, I think judgement time has come and gone.
OT:
As there is nothing l can do to change your mind l won’t waste my time bothering. But doing so will only let you assume, incorrectly that you either have made a point or, worse atill think you are actually right for a change.
Again and again you have dismissed comments on what you a victim of the acts of Robert Mugabe view as racism.
I have shown you things which seem to be beyond your comprehension.
If you are okay with the things that Beck has said and done in the past that is up to you and l thank you. It gives me a good place to start when replying to any further comment by you on any of these contentious issues.
On point a) Beck on his tv show says himself that calling President Obama white is a racist statement, yet days later he actually does call President Obama white, the thing he said was racist days earlier. What, were you distracted when that bit occured?
b)Did you read all of the piece or just the headline? Why am l asking such a stupid question? If you had bothered to scroll down youy would have seen Beck describing health reform as “reparations”, that “Office of Minority Health” could allow for “litigation against Doritos” since “minorities” may “eat more Doritos.”, that President Obama’s agenda is to “settle old racial scores.”, that President Obama planted the Gates question because it “helps” him rally “hardcore supporters.”, and that President Obama was satisfying his “desire for racial justice” though “intimidation, vilification, bullying.” all in the week which ended with him saying that the President, who was brought up by his white grandparents, was a racist with “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”
c)What?
Seriously, WHAT?!?!?!?
I will again post the end piece of the article:
This is the writer talking about the fact that the man who is throwing out the charge of racism against well, anyone else, comes from a background where racial intolerance was not only the norm but promoted, and his comments listed above give a very strong guide that he is someone who agrees with everything that has been said. If i’m wrong, post a link where Beck denounces the racist actions of his church.
You also have the fact that this hate-mongering bigot is also a dangerous promoter of extremist propoganda:
http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/glenn-becks-long-history-extremist-r
But none of that seems to have penetrated that large section of bone which surrounds your skull because you don’t think that these type of actions are racist. If this is the type of reasoning l can expect to see from supposedly deeply religious types that comes from denying evolution then i’m glad i’m out of it.
Well that staement says more about you than some of the other things you have posted in the last few weeks, including you insults of the dead. You saw the job a cushy one where you can line your pockets and strut around acting powerful. You act as if the hate-mongering bigot had only mention Jones once. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR WEEKS WITH JONES SOMEHOW THE CENTRE OF A WEB OF BECK’S OWN DERANGED MAKING. Just because you lack the integrity to resign from it don’t assume that others share your lack of morality or conviction to look at the bigger picture and do something you may not wish to. I stand by my statement that his resignation should have been rejected, but that’s by-the-by now.
At 6.46pm today l wondered if l would have to answer any more stupid questions on why l called the hate-mongering bigot a hate-mongering bigot. I said l wouldn’t and now i’m wasting time with doing so.
Yeah?
Really?
Well, looking at most of your commentary in the last few weeks your judgement of me won’t mean too much, but go ahead.
You would be better off judging my character from this:
I REFER YOU TO THE STATEMENT OF FORMER VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD CHENEY TO SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY ON THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE JUNE 22ND 2004.
Enjoy.
Shockwaver. Yes you have a point. I spend too much time looking at the politics and not enough time thinking about whether I actually like or support the policies.
That’s probably because your domestic policy doesn’t bother me too much, I just wonder why anyone would try to introduce bad legislation and use up most of their political capital in their first six months in office. Oops, I’m doing it again.
I’ll try harder in future.
Incidentally, I did like your post on health care and I apologise for being so slow to say so. I don’t agree with all of it but I liked the way you set it out.
Israel…you say:
“the man who is throwing out the charge of racism against well, anyone else, comes from a background where racial intolerance was not only the norm but promoted, and his comments listed above give a very strong guide that he is someone who agrees with everything that has been said.”
That sounds an awful lot like van Jones and Obama to me…their “backgrounds” are just as ‘evil’ as Beck’s….you can fill in the racial comments they made, in your own time.
So really, what point have you made?
As for me lacking integrity to resign from what Beck is saying about van Jones why don’t you show some integrity and admit that Beck may well be right??
You say:
“Again and again you have dismissed comments on what you a victim of the acts of Robert Mugabe view as racism.”
Please show me the dates and times this has been asked of me.
A perfect example of why the squealing from the far right does them no credit.
Jim Greer, the Florida GOP Chairman who last week accused the President of trying to “indoctrinate America’s children to his socialist agenda” now has this response:
““It’s a good speech,” Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer said Monday. “It encourages kids to stay in school and the importance of education and I think that’s what a president should do when they’re gonna talk to students across the country.”
Seriously, regardless of all of the braying from the far right did anyone expect anything different. This is a President who has talked about personal responsibility multiple times in the past, in spite of being criticized by many on the left.
There was no surprise here…and all those who were crying “The sky is falling!!” now look simply foolish.
I’m looking forward to the time when we have a Republican opposition that gains a voice of reason.
Morgan:
With the likes of Bachmann, Palin and De Miny as politicos, and the media arm led by Limbaugh and Beck you have a long wait ahead of you.
Israel:
Obama has made mistakes, something that the GOP should be able to capitalize on in the next election…only I truly think they may spew forth a nominee on the ranks of Palin. Perhaps if they see what happens to them when they continue to give in to the dowackadoo section of their party they will return to giving strength to the best part of themselves. Alas, I agree..We are going to go through a period of Beck, Bachmann, Orly Taitz and Limbaugh being their choice of leadership.
YeeHaw.
OT:
What a surprise!!!
After going point by point over what you ignored to back up my factual staement about Beck you then want to move the goalposts and swing it round with the traditional right wing response of “Well he did it too!!”
Can you please point to where President Obama has on tv or in the media described a single white member of any party as “a racist with a deep seated fear of black people”?
Or asked a member of another party if he can trust them because of their religion?
Or threw out a salacious racial sterotype based on a type of snack they are eating?
I could go on but l think l made my point.
Its also interesting to see you talk the talk but fail miserably to walk the walk.
You put up a challenge, which l accepted to show you why l called the hate-mongering bigot a hate-mongering bigot. Now you expect me about your false claims about Jones and Obama, which if they had any real validity you would have had no real trouble taking the time to post to prove what you have said.
Wow!!
How angry am l?
I’m so angry l actually refered to myself in the third person!!
Now that’s angry!!
Israel:
Seriously. Why are you even engaging about Beck???
No rational individual views him as anything but one of those wingnut oddities.
Companies are pulling their advertisements because of his “out there” performances…and those that listen to him with any thought other than “Isn’t this amusing” reveal what level they will stoop to for their political analysis..using “analysis” in its most loose interpretation.
Beck is a fool..period. A clown for the wingnut extremist. Nothing more, nothing less.
Cabbie
This will be my last post.
In spite of your balanced efforts and well-reasoned positions in defense of conservatism you seem to have attracted an unsavory group to your blog.
I have never encountered the kinds of vitriolic screed as has been directed at my cohort group, and thus indirectly me, and at my country, as I have here. What makes this worse is the self-proclaimed moderates accept this without comment while they are quick to condemn intemperate remarks on the other side.
The first group is composed of smart people who know exactly what they are doing. Who knows why? Perhaps it is some kind of self-therapy, the need for a punching bag. I find the second group to be a spoiled and intellectually vacuous group that I do not associate with in my personal life and I see no reason to do that here.
I do not know why your blog has not attracted more conservatives. Perhaps visitors read some of the more rabid comments and just leave.
I have tried to focus mostly on policy issues but your crew of commenters has shown little interest in those and absolutely none in discussing the long-term consequences. My heartfelt non-policy post on my belief in God was followed by the usual sarcasm and demeaning remarks about religious people — again without scorn from the moderates.
No need to reply, I’m outa here; you’all can justify yourselves to each other.
Morgan:
Sorry Morgan but Beck, along with the likes of Limbaugh, Bachmann and Palin are the republican party. The 20% of people who identify themselves as republicans are listening, watching and tweeting with them.
The 1% of Americans who make up Beck’s audience consists mainly of them. This is no longer the party of rational debate as has been shown over the summer at the townhalls with the astroturf rent-a-mobs. These are people who will shout down a woman in a wheelchair telling her personal story, lie about being attacked then ask for donation because they don’t have insurance, scream at representitives to “keep their government hands off my medicare”, and ignore the real “death panels” in insurance companies that will not cover you or increase their premiums forcing you to go without.
You will find no William Buckley’s there and it’s frustrating listening to the president wasting time trying to deal with people who have only one agenda, stop his progress and get him defeated.
People are listening to Beck’s lies and bigoted hate-mongering which will now increase as he feels he has won. More intelligent people will move away in disgust but the rump of the republicans, expecially in the south who want “their” country back, will flock to this extremist in droves.
Cabbie:
Wow.
Not sure where to start.
I’m going to be stuck in Bracknell today, will think on the points raised by Shockwaver.
I think we can see why the loudest part of the GOP is becoming a shrinking rump. Only the transmit button is switched on. The receiver is broken.
Israel
That’s garbage and you know it.
Even your own statistics prove it’s garbage.
And then laughingly, you criticise the right for having only one agenda. As though, for the last eight years, we haven’t just been hearing about Iraq ad nauseum. The right are behaving no differently to the way left behaved over Bush. You, Morgan and Ronnie either have incredibly short memories, or are being entirely disingenuous.
We’ve lost shockwaver because of the left’s rhetoric of hate. If you (all of you) think shockwaver is just a wingnut, then you really do have a perverse view of the right. There is nothing Beckian about him. We have witnessed Matthews and Olbermann throw around racial epithets, Rachel Maddow just make things up, the Democratic Party are infected with tax cheats and fraudsters, top Democratic party officials calling people un-american, a President who pours scorn on the American people, trade union and party activist thugs literally tearing opponents limb from limb ( a finger is a limb
) and I could go further to describe the lunacy of the left. But you all just ignore this because it doesn’t fit your self-manufactured little worlds. There is stupidity on both sides, just as there is serious commentary on both sides. And shockwaver was definitely a serious commentator for the right here.
The left are just as responsible for the nature of the dialogue, both here on this blog and in America, as the right are.
Shockwaver…you must not leave us…please. I love your articles, even if I dont comment on them, I support your views.
Disingenuous, moi?
shockwaver,
You should stay, you present cogent and measured arguments supporting your opinions. I may not personally agree with most of them, but Mr Cabbie’s blog is open to all.
As for vitriol and hatred I have not expressed any towards you personally nor towards any on this blog, I stand to be corrected. Now my opinions on the actions, domestic and in foreign adventures of US administrations of all hues may not meet with approval from those on the right who contribute. But that is what blogging is about.
For I do not subscribe to the aphorism “My country right or wrong” and am prepared to give and have given the same serve* to both my country of origin the UK and my country of adoption the C of A
* to give a serve is an expression from Down Under which appertains to the telling of facts about a matter that no one wishes to hear in a rather robust fashion!
shockwaver,
I had originally written this addressed to An American, inreponse to her plaint that I am always savaging the US. But for some reason it did not make it though to the blog
The facts are the facts.
Those who were rich and well connected backed Hitler in funding the re arming of the Reich. Does that not say something about a moral stance that sees no connection between those actions and the conflict that arose.
Do not worry the US is/was not alone in such behaviour. In my country of origin the UK the Conservatives as I have mentioned in an earlier post also thought Hitler a good fellow. see Israel’s 2 Sep “Jaw Drop, Scratch Head, Say WTF?”
As did Robert Menzies aka Ming, later PM of the Commonwealth of Australia, my country of adoption. Another fine chickenhawk of a leader, who believed that Mr Hitler was a good fellow following a visit as Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Australia. Then as PM he wrote to Australia’s High Commissioner in London suggesting the allies should give Hitler another chance and that a peace deal with Hitler should be considered.
“I feel quite confident that Hitler has no desire for a first class war.
Nobody really cares a damn about Poland as such”.
“Some very quick thinking will have to be done when the German offer arrives to provide for a resettlement of the whole map of Europe”.
Ming also had a far more pejorative nick name “Pig Iron Bob”. The outcome of his industrial battle, as AG, with waterside workers who refused to load scrap iron being sold to Japan. Scrap that was being turned into steel for use in Japan’s war of Imperial expansion through out China, SE Asia and finally in attacks on Australia and the US.
There is even The Pig-Iron Song see and hear more @ http://unionsong.com/u150.html
Did you ever stop to wonder why the fellows on the job
Refer to Robert Menzies by the nickname Pig-Iron Bob?
It’s a fascinating tale though it happened long ago
It’s a part of our tradition evey worker ought to know
Chorus
We wouldn’t load pig-iron for the fascists of Japan
Despite intimidation we refused to lift the ban
With democracy at stake the struggle must be won
We had to beat the menace of the fascist Rising Sun
©1964 Clem Parkinson
Another short verse
1939 – Pig Iron Bob
Pig Iron Bob
Come play and skirl
The Hun is in Warsaw
The Jap’s at the Pearl.
But where are the men
Who made on the deal?
They’re in Geneva
Re-selling the steel.
Apropos of Geneva of course “There is no such thing as dirty money” as the Swiss will tell you.
Wars are sooo good for our business, they could also say
