Some on the right are getting their knickers in a twist about Obama’s proposed address to all public school children on Sep 8th.

I’m not that concerned. A couple of things do bother me, firstly, if as the timing suggests, the address is all about health care and getting the little Harry’s and Henrietta’s to persuade Mommy and Daddy that supporting reform is a good thing, then I think that is inappropriate. But I have seen no evidence that this is the case. Secondly, amongst the teaching aids related to this address, two related questions teachers are told to ask of their children are:

What do you think the President wants us to do?

Does the speech make you want to do anything?

While in a context free situation, these questions are fairly innocuous, connected to each other, they are somewhat leading. But again, without the context of Obama’s speech, one can’t determine whether these questions are innocent or insidious.

Right wing parents are talking about withholding their pupils from school on that day. That’s madness. The Presidency has always been a position that commands respect, regardless of the office holder. Sure, that respect has been diminished post LBJ/Nixon (and certainly during the Bush Presidency), but the youth should be encouraged, not discouraged, from respecting the Office of President regardless of the office holder.

But there is an even better reason for children going to school that day, and it is the so what factor as this insightful comment tells us:

Besides which, I know from experience that my boy is going to tune out any speech lasting longer than 30 seconds in favor of poking the little kid sitting next to him.

Lest we forget, for those who think this a dastardly evil plot for domination of the young, this event is supposed to take place on Sept 8th. As the planes flew into the World Trade Center on Sept 11th, George W Bush was at a school also.

like I said I’m not too concerned. But let me ask you this. If during the height of The Iraq war, it was announced that Bush was going to address all the school children in America, and that as part of the related teaching aids, all the children were to be asked “How can I help President Bush”, would you be as unconcerned? Do you think the American left would just laugh it off as an irrelevance?

    Just asking.

  4. Ronnie on September 3rd, 2009 10:05 am

It wouldn’t bother me. I still remember the days when the President was the President and was obliged and entitled to speak to all Americans as often as possible.

As for the American Left, I have no doubt that they would react just as hysterically as their cousins on the Right are doing now. I want no part of it.

  9. An American on September 3rd, 2009 12:12 pm

    C. Cabbie,

What bothers me about this is that it isn’t put into the context of ‘country’…it’s all about Obama.

It’s about cult…exactly how the Nazis and Communists sold their leaders to the public.

Read the questions for the little impressionable tykes that the liberal teacher’s have devised for this event…What can you do to help your president?, etc.

I remember as a child of twelve or so… a young German woman who was a neighbor that spoke glowingly of Hitler. She was perhaps eight or nine when Hitler came into power…so you can imagine the mental effect his propaganda still had on her years later.

At my young age, I was shocked that she would still adore a man like Hitler after the carnage he wreaked. She was a zombie-like worshipper when it came to Hitler.

We’ve all seen videos of children singing in praise of Obama and young black boys marching and swearing obedience to Obama.

This has to nipped in the bud and quickly.

  10. Ronnie on September 3rd, 2009 12:23 pm

    The bud-nipping has started.

  11. An American on September 3rd, 2009 12:34 pm

My feeling is that Obama’s star is fading at warp speed with adults…so he has turned his attentions to our vulnerable children.

Your are correct Ronnie…he is evil incarnate.

What do you think the President wants us to do?

Does the speech make you want to do anything?

    Denounce Conservatives.

  16. Morgan on September 3rd, 2009 1:41 pm

Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

One of the best things about the asshattery of the right wing pearl-clutching is that it is another example of the infinite memory void of the right wing echo chamber.

    President George H W Bush:

    http://www.nytimes.com/1989/09/13/us/bush-urges-youngsters-to-help-friends-on-drugs.html

Selton Shaw, who watched the President’s speech with his classmates at Stevens Elementary School, said many youngsters in his own neighborhood, many as young as 7, were drug users

The President’s drug package calls for more prosecutors, more prisons, stiffer sentences for drug sellers and users and aid to nations fighting drug rings. In speaking directly to the young, Mr. Bush adopted a different approach, reaching out to the potential victims of the drug epidemic.

At least 15,000 superintendents and 55,000 principals were notified by the Education Department of the speech today, and many schools held assemblies or brought television sets into classrooms so students could watch Mr. Bush. ‘Won’t Make You a Nerd’

In the speech, Mr. Bush said that saying no to drugs ”won’t make you a nerd”

As well as this piece of dumb hackery from from the three stupids on f**kwits and friends:

    http://www.dailykostv.com/w/002100/

As you can see, although Bush’s speech did contain some inspirational rhetoric, significant portions of it were focused promoting his own education plan.

A conspiracy theorist might even claim Bush’s goal was to influence parents in the upcoming election by “indoctrinating” their children.

If you can be bothered, which l doubt, you can read the full transcript.

Or you can just recite the talking points which of course is a lot easier.

.” Much of Reagan’s speech that day covered the American “vision of self-government” and the need “to keep faith with the unfinished vision of the greatness and wonder of America” but in the middle of the speech, the president went off on a tangent about the importance of low taxes

During the question-and-answer portion of the event, Reagan returned to the topic, this time telling the students that lowering taxes increases revenue

A question, when you are running your scientific experiments, do you run around shouting and screaming before you have analysed your results and compiled your evidence?

some experiments are such catastrophic failures that no analysis is required. only diehards who cannot face facts dig in and believe something can be salvaged.

there is a distinction between being optimistic and being a fool, at least as far as scientific experimentation is concerned.

  66. An American on September 4th, 2009 7:34 pm

Van Jones is an example of the kind of Czars that Obama has given great power to change America.

Van Jones is a San Francico extremist who became radicalized while he was in jail. He is deep rooted in radical politics, Black Nationalism, Anarchism and Communism.

Websites have been cleaned of Van Jone’s Communist manifesto. I couldn’t find out why he was in jail either…so much for Obama’s transparent government.

Van Jones plans to use environmental activism to advocate the ultra left’s Orwellian notion of justice…but in reality, he’s just a thug, he wouldn’t know what justice is if it smacked him in the face.

Apparently, it’s Van Jones that’s been trying to destroy Beck because he did several pieces on him and his history…Do we really want Czars and government officials destroying people for telling the truth about them…is this really happening in America? Yes…it is.

Now it’s been learned that Van Jones signed a 2004 petition with 99 other prominant left wing signatories/nuts…he was number 46 on that list. This petition is call ‘Truthers’ and it asks the New York Attorney General for an investigation into high level government people (Bush and Cheney) who may have deliberately allowed the 9-11 attack to occur.

But, he denies he signed it even though it is there for all to see. Like his great friend Obama, we are not to believe our lying eyes.

Obama has made a bad decision yet again…and will continue to retain this thug. Yes, Van Jones will happily use our tax money to destroy us…if he can get away with it.

Perhaps, Liberty, because some of us, rather than just being rude or yelling loudly, have to conduct business to keep people employed and while I’m here most of mine is done over the internet.

…and tonight its lemon water and broth.

  72. Original Tony on September 4th, 2009 8:43 pm

Morgan…I accept your point of view but if I brought up the topic of race in almost every post I would be told to shut up because I am white. I feel the shoe must fit both feet!
BTW…I love Israel; he’s a great guy that I respect.

  73. Morgan on September 4th, 2009 8:56 pm

Tony, I do agree there are individuals that overuse the charge…and I also believe that racism occurs across the spectrum..but I don’t believe that Israel abuses the reference.

I find the references to Nazi Germany that occur here regularly as offensive. I felt the same when bloggers would use that reference in regards to the Bush Administration. That being said, I’m sure they won’t cease :)

I am sorry if I was rude.
I hope you feel better soon.

I am not sorry to spar with you over the comments you carelessly flung out on this site.

Some of your comments about the “teabaggers” were so insulting to me.

I probably have more in common with you than not, but I have chosen to take a distinctly American stance. I have chosen this because of my upbringing and my reading and my view of the world.

Like you I have lived as an expat and traveled extensively.

If you think that all conservatives are trashy, uneducated miscreants, than you need to come home and live with them, (us)
Americans, (if you are a study of humans) are incredibly generous and open and kind and hardworking.

I was asked by a Conservative years ago
“what is it that makes America better than other countries?”

    Good question!
    I thought.
    My answer:
“Because we are diverse. We are not all English, or Japanese, or German..no pure race here. diverse”
In other words..We are the world!

    I was proud of myself.

“No”, he said. “It is because of our Constitution.”

    think about it.

Thus, the realization that all mankind is the same..which I instinctively knew…but why is it that I TRUST America?

Conservatives honestly believe that the original document works.
Even if it takes us decades to follow it.
    Communism fails.
Socialism is a contract for mediocrity.

Thank you for your words. They are appreciated.

This bug can’t last forever…and I’m lucky. I know individuals with young ones who have gone through this. I know I did that in the past…but am glad not to have to deal with that now.

By the way…I haven’t been over here that long. I arrived with my Visa in May (I believe). Before that I was spending most of my time in the States because of the restriction of traveling on just my passport and most of my friends would probably be described as Conservatives..some very much so.

I am also “distinctly American”…my view is just a bit different..which is okay. When we all have to have the same opinion on everything I will know we’ve failed.

..and again..thank you for your post. It was quite kind:)

  79. Israel on September 4th, 2009 10:31 pm

    Liberty:

    Israel
You called me a racist when you said that I resented having a black President.
You and I both know that a racist is the lowest of the low.

I am against Socialism. I don’t like the Communist advisors and the fascist leanings of this administration and the left behavior of this Congress.

They are not acting in the best interests of the Country or the World.

I believe that Obama is an empty vessel and this is a power grab by some very sick people.

I wouldn’t mind a little change, or a challenging leadership.
    We could all do better.

History tell us that a centralized, preaching, all powerful, know-it-all government does not work.

Do you believe that 65 years ago is so far in the past that nothing bad can happen again?

    Do you?
    Do you?

    Power corrupts.
    Freedom evens things out.

ell on your first point? Bullshit. I wrote “Just because you have a black president you think all the racists have gone away?”

The interesting thing is, I DIDN’T MENTION ANYONE ON THIS SITE BY NAME BECAUSE I DON’T THINK THEY ARE RACISTS. I do think that like a lot of right wingers they tut-tut and roll their eyes on issues of race because they want to ignore it or don’t want to admit that members of the parties that they support or are active in are actual racists, like Pat Buchanan, so haveing the fake sighing and fake troubled headshaking is supposed to deal with it. I just assume it’s one stage up from being photographed with their black frien just like Stephen Colbert.

On your second point? Again bullshit. If you conservatives were so against “communist2 or “socialist” government programmes your healthcare reforms would include the removal of medicare. You would not want to be resuced by firemen or have the police deal with crime. You would not want your car to have the safety standards they have, or the foods you buy from the stores to have the FDA regulations that they have. If you work in a dangerous job you would not want the safety standards there enforced, that’s after you get there on the roads payed for by government money. I couyld go on, and probably should but hopefully you get the point.

On your point about President Obama not working for the best of America and the rest of the world? Bullshit.

The stimulus is actually doing it’s job even though the sad sacks in the party you support who are taking the money and gleaning as much political capital as possible over it refuse to admit it, and the only people around the world who have a problem with US foreign policy at the moment are the members of Likund, neocons like Mel Philips, Americans who want their country attacked like Michael Sheurer, and increasingly impotent Dick Cheney who is now seen as a saviour of the right wing by some. Keep in that crowd if you want.

You think that this is a power grab by some very sick people do you? What, like the patriot act or wiretapping americans illegally or signing staements? Shoe’s on the other foot now and now you want to say you are worried? Cry me a f**king river. Maybe if you had joined the “Dirty F**king Hippies” in denouncing the previous actual power grab, not the deranged fantasies of this decades Howard Beale you may have had a little support from some with your tin-foil accusations.

You wouldn’t m ind a little cahnge? Bullshit. Name one thing done in the last 8 months that you have agreed with. I bet if they followed the policies that have failed your country for the last 8 years and left you intghe shit, ie just continued following the status quo, you would have been very happy with that. Well, your lot failed which is one of the reasons why they are now out of power. The only thing that they can do and are doing is obstruct. as l said before on another post Cabbie pointed out that there is a republican healthcare plan but your lot are not interested in promoting that. The game plan is to bring down President Obama’s numbers not increase your own because your shitty ideas have failed and are not wanted apart from by the mid twenties support you have congealed mainly in the south.

You are right about one thing. 65 years ago wasn’t too far away for us to see what an unfettered, preaching, centralised, all-powerful, know nothing but acting the know-it-all government did. That was called the 106 Congress.

    OT this is to you:

Thank you for the love but you need to realise thst you are neither the moderator, the owner or the moral compass here. Your personal circumstances in Zimbabwe give you a unique insight into some racial issues but, just as we both don’t need to go to the South Pole to realise that it’s bloody cold, l don’t have to take your interpretation of what the actions of the racists are in America, who are increasingly crawling out of the woodwork because they are being given cover by cowardly republicans too scared to lose votes from an increasingly deranged base, to be the facts.
As l said above, there are things you will tut-tut about, roll your eyes and gloss over. Fine. Do that, but l will be damned before l stick to your interpretation of things. I will stick to the evidence of my own eyes, not someone who believes that President Obama’s mother was involved in a conspiracy 48 years ago just on the chance he would become president.

I hope you start feeling better. I went in for my flu shot this afternoon…I’m almost afraid to take the HlNl shot when it becomes available…I’m not sure I trust it.

Are many people there getting the HlNl? It isn’t suppose to be too virulent right now, unless so many people get it that it mutates. Maybe if a person get the first wave of it, they will be protected from a hardier stain…who knows.

  83. An American on September 4th, 2009 11:33 pm

    Wow…interesting day.

    Liberty really got things going.

I do think that THX likes Americans and America a lot…He once said he would prefer living in the US.

We can only hope he appreciates America’s sacrifice for the UK and Europe in WWII. I had three uncles who fought in that war.

He’s young and was raised in a now socialist country and is deep into the arts which is filled chock-full with far-lefties. I’m old enough and strong enough in my beliefs to have been able to avoid that ‘artistic’ indoctrination…

But, for all of that…he’s a very nice fellow and I like him.

And let’s keep the name ‘Asshole’ for Van Jones…he fully deserves it. :)

  84. THX1138 on September 4th, 2009 11:44 pm

    An American thanks

I do love America you know that and would move to LA in shot.

Not so young though I’m 47 in 6 weeks and yes that picture I posted from the beach in Mexico was taken last year.

I was raised in the UK of Margaret Thatcher who was a lot of things but certainly not a socialist

Of course I appreciate the sacrifice made by so many Americans to help rid Europe of the Nazis but we musn’t forget the unimaginable sacrifice that the Russian people went through in what they call The Great Patriotic War, to do so would be churlish & ignorant in the extreme.

  85. An American on September 4th, 2009 11:55 pm

    THX,

You forget that Russia fought to survive as did the Brits…The US could have stayed away an ocean away and watched…but we didn’t.

    Now, that truly is sacrifice.

Surely, you can see the difference?

We and you did not suffer as much as, say, Belarus, which lost perhaps a quarter of its population, or the Soviet Union as a whole, with maybe 25m dead.

  87. Israel on September 5th, 2009 12:35 am

    An American:

    Go jump in a lake.

    I mean that seriously.

Just like OT you do not control the narrative here so do not assume to tell me which way l choose to respond to your innaity.

What is the reason you have for your overblown rhetorical statement that Jones is a sicko? Do you have one or are you as usual blowing smoke?

Nor is it about justifying Jones to someone who is happy with a sitting member of congress accusing people of being anti-American just like tail-gunner Joe. Just because you’re happy with the mad bint it doesn’t mean that others have to be.

Do you know why Jones has gained so much prominence in the last few weeks?

    Well it’s because of this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K8R2PDmbmA

Something so stupid and offensive that it took Kilmeade from F**kwit and Friends to call him out on it.

So what happened next? Well, this did:

    http://www.colorofchange.org/beck/

    Hmmmm……..

The starts of a boycott by this group. But what has that to do with Jones?

Well this is the mission statement for Colorofchange who were started after the ineptitude of the response of the Bush Administration and it’s list of founders:

    http://www.colorofchange.org/about.html

    Van Jones (Co-founder, inactive)

While Van hasn’t been active in the work of ColorOfChange in recent years, we are proud of where his work las led him. After helping ColorOfChange get started in 2005, Van moved on to other pursuits. In 2007, he founded and served as the executive director of Green For All, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for low-income communities connected to the greater effort of addressing climate change. Van now serves as Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

So we the combined elements of a boycott of a racist for making a racist statement and a group his defenders can target because the boycott is, contrary to some right wing internet reports, working.

    So what to do?

Well first, after whining like a little bitch with the fake crying you try to link them to anything you can, and do so using a whiteboard. Just to make sure. Okay, rational people think you’re a complete f**king nutcase but hey, it’s worth a shot.

Then, you go the complete Danny De Vito in “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and do a long near 7 minute rant about the man and his history using the tried and tested “lets just fling some shit and see what sticks” republican idea. Hell it worked in the past, even though you lot went too far with Vince Foster.

But the thing is, it’s still not working. Advertisers are sprinting away from you and your boss is “giving you the week off2 in the hope that it calms down, but this has no effect. So what happens next?

Well it’s something to shoot you’re load into your pants over. “THIS GUY IS A 9/11 TRUTHER” you screech, and bring on the self hating anchor baby, the queen of the flying monkeys and stalker of small sick children Malkin to have that dark-skinned republican face on tv to show how fair you are. truely you learnt that lesson from Colbert well.

    What will this do?

Well, hopefully it distracts from the fact that Beck is an insane, racist, conspiracy theorist and one of his right wing political buddies will go on other faux shows and try to get a response (funny that this self proclaimed “commentator” now wants to act like a journalist and get a response from the White House) from someone other than a faux news host to this. Better yet just leave it up to the “liberal media”.

Now at this point i’m majorly hacked off. Not just by this piece of shit, his fucked up ranting and his fake crying but by the pavlovian responses from sad sacks who nod their heads in agreement with him and who piss and moan about civility, ideals and what it means to be a christian or an american without a fucking clue as to what either seems to be. Wankers who spout on and on about the Ten Commandments while rutting with their friends wives in a christianist doss house in Washington while all the time justifyingthem selves by saying that there are really only Eight, Adultery and False Witness are really shaky.

Jones has said that he has changed in his radical views. Is this true? Well right now, l don’t give a f**k. There. I said it. I’m fed up with people who are apologists for torture, and stupidity, and greed, and for an unfeeling, uncaring group of fakers trying to tell ME that they are the ones in the right when we have seen from the last two election cycles nothing but cynicism, racism, fear-mongering and hubris, which has seen them rejected by the majority of voters.

I’m fed up of the president trying to compromise with a bunch of two faced cowards who say one thing to the camera but are too chicken shit to do anything because they know that if they try to be resposible and calm down the racist craxies who support them they will be ostracized. And finally i’m fed up of people with “scary Blackman Syndrome” finding different ways to try to excuse it because looking in the mirror will just show them how hatefilled and pathetic they are.

So no, i don’t give two shits about the right wing response to Jones. Anyone who can have a blame americans first advocate and hater like Falwell around won’t get me to make a nice response about anything right now.

Israel…my point is that racists exist on both sides of the aisle. Conservatives may literally voice their racism but liberals demonstrate it by keeping minorities suppressed through ‘dependancy policies’ like affirmative action.

Wouldn’t you rather face a man who calls you a racist name to your face than have someone smile at you while shafting your race behind your back? The lefts hatred of minorities is evil because it’s so subtle. They smile and pat minorities on the head while silently using the ‘n’ word behind their backs.

And answer me straight…is Jones a racist, yes or no? An Am and I are waiting for an answer, or maybe you didn’t look at my youtube clip??

You, like me, are a person on a blog.

You, like me, have a point of view.

I think that from where you are the racists you invite for whine and cheese don’t email you the jokes they get, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

You are part of the crowd that has enjoyed what has happened this summer with the disgusting shouting down of people telling their stories of what happened to their families and their desperate fight for healthcare, including a woman in a wheelchair who somehow didn’t make it onto faux because she was for reform, not against it. The same type that shouted “Heil Hitler” at a jewish man.

Why would a member of the right wing want pople to have access to a better way of life instead of just giving profits to corporations?

Why have a debate when you can have an over 65 scream about socialsim while waving a government cheque?

Why try for meaningful exchanges when it’s easier to send out emails from your WASO church lying about killing granny?

Here’s something for you. Why don’t YOU who are so convinced about the status of things in the US and where you are going see i you can get people who agree wit hyou to sit down with people of the opposite view point and actually debate on issues. No calling each other names, no lies about granny, no influence from lobbyists.

Now l predict, just like with the last two election cycles that if you tried to win an arguement on issues you would lose, which is why your party isn’t even bothering right now.

You have NOTHING to bring to the table, which is why you guys bring nothing. If it was so great you would do your best to promote it but you don’t. Why is that?

The right wing sneering at afferimative action is really funny, expecially when it comes out of the mouths of people like Jonah Goldberg, or Tucker Carlson, or Cokie Roberts, or Bill Kristol, and expcially when they were talikng about the daughter of a single parent from Puerto Rica who worked hard to become a Supreme Court Judge. I’m sure you get my point.

No, conservatives voice their racism by calling a policy designed to give an oppressed minority the same sort of chance that the people of entitlement (that would be the WHITE majority) have. While the likes of Clarence Thomas are far too busy puling up the laddrr behind them so they can act like the fat kid locked in a choclate shop the rest of us, bar Jessie Lee Peterson, see that meme for what it is, B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T.

You can spout it as many times as you wish as you grumble about why black people don’t want to join your happy little band. I know it makes you feel better.

One thing, don’t have a go at liberals because your lot can’t be bothered to even attempt to hide their racism anymore. It just makes you look silly.

On your Jones piece why don’t you find the entire thing and post that instead of a 30 second soundbite? i know how you hate when people are taken out of context :-)

No good will come of this ugly racist’s tenure as a Czar…although I believe that Obama knew and approved of Van Jones’ past behavior…he somehow thought that because he chose him…it would be ok. Ego has a way of blinding people.

It’s interesting that the liberal media..NY Times, ABC, NBC and CBS, etc. is so far protecting Van Jones, probably because Obama’s people called them…but they won’t be able to keep this guy under cover for long…its all coming out and it’s really, really ugly and Obama is naive if he somehow thinks that this won’t reflect on him…he personally chose this guy to be one of his annoited Czars. From dairist Hunter on Kos:

    http://hunter.dailykos.com/

This, then, is the latest apocalypse. We will all take a break from shouting down terminally ill people at town halls, and from wondering whether our president has a circumcised penis, and whether that would imply deficient citizenship on his part, if the answer was the wrong one. We will pause, momentarily, in our efforts to declare that preventing sick people from going bankrupt and sending themselves and their families into lifelong poverty is, in fact, a slippery slope to communism, and from writing signs warning against the dangers of Facism and Markism, whatever those are. No, this is the latest battleground, because America, its discourse and its governance has, to put it as tersely as possible, become all but enslaved to the stupidest, most uneducated, trashiest, most fanatic, most incompetent, most mentally unbalanced, most flat out fucking dumb set of people to ever manage to walk upright. After a millennium of being led around by great leaders and not so great leaders, of great debates and petty ones, of steady marches towards freer and richer and more enlightened societies, we have apparently decided to chuck it all, because any pulsing mound of meat with the ability to work a magic marker will now be as a god to us.

In order to guess at the next Republican white noise that will issue forth from their lips, a pattern is developing. Take one part stuffy, lying Pravda, combine it with three parts of implausible satire from The Onion, a dash of fake and astroturfed populism, and mix it all together with a big heaping helping of good old fashioned, dumb-as-a-post American gullibility, the kind only the biggest and gruffest and loudest morons among us could possibly provide. Never before has an American movement so giddily celebrated their own ignorance, or so proudly crafted their own alternate realities and then stuck to them despite any and all evidence to the contrary.

And yes, I am counting the Know Nothings, who knew more.

It is possible that if I were a truly gifted satirist — a Twain, Mencken or the like — I could find a more imaginative way of describing all of this. If I were a Swift or a Hunter S. Thompson, I imagine I could pull it off. Perhaps.

On the other hand, maybe none of those people lived in times quite like this. Sure, they lived in ridiculous times, and among ridiculous people, and saw truly asinine things. But this ridiculous, populated by people this stubbornly gullible, and this celebrated by their own leaders? I’m no longer sure that it’s a given. Perhaps we have managed to shoot the moon, to wrap around again to the point where uninformed, dribbling paranoia is now finally and permanently more respectable than actual governance. Sarah Palin is, for a large part of the Republican Party, the closest thing to an intellectual voice that their version of know-nothing populism will allow, and that is very nearly the scariest thought to set itself down in the political landscape for a great many years.

Republican leaders have taken intelligence to the guillotine, and lopped its head clean off: from now on “the opposition is plotting to kill your grandmother” will have far more sway, in politics, than any actual realities of a healthcare system clearly and blatantly gone wrong. We boo those with medical conditions. We deny outright that the first non-white President of the United States is even a citizen of his own country, much less leader of it. We still insist that an administration breaking the law is less divisive and controversial than daring to investigate it. We put brick-stupid or malevolently selfish people on television, and feign outrage at anyone who points out their stupidity or selfishness. And the President speaking to your children is the onset of communism, although perhaps barely a tenth of the population that utter it have any actual notion of what “communism” might actually be.

From where l stand it’s pretty hard to argue.

The extreme is now the nucleus of the party and those in the minority who still have a job are too scared to stand up to them or too busy finding ways to appease them to keep them as voters. Things will get uglier as it gets closer to 2010 and the mid-terms as the Light Brigade charge led by Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity gets mounted and ready to dig it’s spurs in.

But then goes on to say:

We will pause, momentarily, in our efforts to declare that preventing sick people from going bankrupt and sending themselves and their families into lifelong poverty is, in fact, a slippery slope to communism,

Which of course is a complete fabrication. The right are identifying the flat out descent into communism as a flat out descent into commuism. Well OK, communism is too strong (it is Hunter’s word, not anyones on the left), but the public option is a flat out descent into socialism, as is the buyout of GM, as is Card check and the Fairness Doctrine, as were many measures in the stimulus bill which empower unions, as is the large amount of money being given to the unions in the health bill.

and from writing signs warning against the dangers of Facism and Markism, whatever those are.

What because the left have never used the term “fascist” to describe anyone? Come on, let’s have at least the pretence of serious commentary from the left.

or so proudly crafted their own alternate realities and then stuck to them despite any and all evidence to the contrary.

This is a perfect description of the way the left protect their so-called poverty and inner city reforms. Look at the timeline. There are poor people in the inner cities. The left recognise this and so spend loads of money on them, turning them into dependents on welfare and dulling any sense of self-responsibility. Now there are still loads of poor people in the inner cities, except now they are drug addled and crime ridden. And the left try to claim that they are doing good. Talk about an intellectual deficit.

If anyone is “all but enslaved to the stupidest, most uneducated, trashiest, most fanatic, most incompetent, most mentally unbalanced, most flat out fucking dumb set of people to ever manage to walk upright.”, it is the type of liberaldom represented by the Daily Kos.
