….It all goes horribly wrong. The Cash for Clunkers program that is. This is the program that allows individuals to upgrade their old car to a new one with the aid of a government subsidy. Here is what one Republican Congresswoman, Candice Miller, had to say about Obama’s, and the Democrats, plan:
There can be no doubt that the Cash for Clunkers program is a complete success given the fact that the entire $1 billion allocated to the program was expended in less than a week.”
She called the program “simply the most stimulative $1 billion the federal government has spent during the entire economic downturn.”
How is that for effusive praise. However…
The Obama administration is telling lawmakers that its much-touted “cash-for-clunkers” program is already running out of money, according to three Senate aides familiar with the discussions.
The program — aimed at giving at boost to the U.S. auto industry — was supposed to expire at the end of October. But in the one week since it took effect, it appears to have run dry of the $1 billion allocated to it, aides said Thursday.

So the genius’ in charge budgeted $1 billion for a stimulative program that worked, and $787 billion on a whole bunch of programs that didn’t.
Rightly, the administration are now planning to further fund the project. But as is usual for the left and left leaning, there will be a catch:
We believe that any extension of the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program must go further in advancing the goals of better fuel efficiency and greater emissions reductions. We will not support any bill that does not meet these goals,” they (Dianne Feinstein & Susan Collins*) said in a statement.
The Democrats have a successful stimulative program. Why can’t they just leave it at that? Why do they always have to invoke some special interest? That’s not what the country is wanting right now, they just want jobs.
* Yes I’m aware Susan Collins is technically a Republican, but as she spends most of her time voting with the Democrats nowadays, I’m happy to lump her in with them.

What can you say about these folk, intelligent but immensely stupid?
High intellect but ignorant of consequences.
“I am ok” so I will “stuff you around” mentality.
Top man/woman but with no experience…it’s nauseating…I hate politics actually
I simply can’t stand this ridiculous waste. These ’so-called’ clunkers are perfectly good cars that have many more years in them…what an asinine idea…but hey, it makes the Liberals feel good about doing something for ‘mother earth’…even though churning out more cars will undo it.
Then, An American, you will have no car industry and lots of people with no spending power to use on consumables and then even more people with no spending power.
Ronnie,
Do you really believe that giving people money to destroy perfectly good cars will save the car industry. Even with all the billions poured into this rathole…GM will fail. Please remember this statement when it happens…
GM should have been permitted to tank…let Ford and other car companies take over the slack. I along with many other Americans will never, ever buy a GM car…they sold out to the Union and the socialization of America.
Ronnie,
Since when is it good business to award a company that fails? Because, that is exactly what Obama is doing for GM…And it won’t work. The reason it failed is still inherent in that company…its called the United Auto Worker’s Union.
It’s not that there isn’t a need for unions…just not unions like UAW which is run by thug mafia types. They have destroyed this company and I am being forced by Obama to pay tribute to these thugs with my taxes.
Well, An American, I was tought that the American economy was built on the principle of planned obsolesence. Things last a few years then you buy another one, thus keeping things ticking over and ensuring growth.
I assume that the clunker idea follows the same principle and is intended to stimulate a demand that once existed. However, I also take your point and think that the UAW must also understand what’s happening and drastically change their ways. Companies are not banks that can be infinitely drawn on.
GM has been given a stay of execution and one wonders if all concerned will use it wisely.
I have mixed feelings over this one I do agree with Am American that people should keep cars much longer my old Volvo Is ten years old and runs great I feel no need to chop her in.
I saw a great line in a ad on US tv which went
In todays economy
“A car is something which get’s you where your going rather than for telling other people how far you have
come. ”
Without some Governmemt help millions could lose their jobs and I never here the right moaning when trillons of tax dollars are spent with US Co’s on defence contracts with huge corruption and wastage.
Did you ever wonder why the Millitary Industrial Complex has factories in every state? So they own all your elected representatives.
