Does anyone remember the movie ‘The Candidate’ starring Robert Redford?

I always remember the scene where he is recording a broadcast in a studio and he gets a fit of the giggles when he sees the boom mic above him.

Now I don’t wish to trivialise but I know that I’d get pretty bored and pissed-off making all these portentious and uplifting speeches all the time. Coupled with the realisation that most of what I was saying was empty crap.

So, I’d just start to make stuff up for my own amusement.

Dearieme – I think we just need to accept that there will be a serious amount of hyperbole about Obama over the coming year or two. He is smart and he has had a dramatic impact on the Presidency, no-one can dispute that but nor can the excessive adulation be justified at the moment.

I saw the comment recently that O is “the most intelligent President since Lincoln”. Lord knows how anyone could know that. You could as well guess that Hoover was the most intelligent president, and therefore a stark warning that being intelligent isn’t all that useful if the ideas you cling to are rubbish.
